MPs Slam Anti-Wind Power Campaigners: You Seriously Want To Go Back to Fossil Fuels?

Read time: 5 mins

Anti-wind campaigners and climate science deniers were slammed by MPs today for supporting fossil fuels and ignoring the costs of climate change during a government committee session on renewable energy in Scotland.

Three of the four people invited to give evidence during the House of Lords' Scottish Affairs committee hearing on 13 April were from groups known for their stance against wind power: the Scientific Alliance Scotland, Scotland Against Spin, and the Renewable Energy Foundation and Global Warming Policy Foundation.

But as committee chair and SNP MP, Pete Wishart, put it to them: “The days of coal power generation are surely over given the global concerns about global warming [and] the Paris Agreement… so what would we power the country with?”

Anti-Wind Campaigner John Constable Joins Lord Lawson’s Climate Sceptic GWPF Think Tank

Read time: 3 mins

Director of the anti-wind charity, Renewable Energy Foundation (REF), John Constable has joined the campaigning arm of Lord Lawson’s climate science denying charity as energy editor and policy advisor.

As the quietly released Global Warming Policy Forum’s (GWPForum) press release boasts: “John is well known in the sector for his trenchant critique of target-led and subsidy driven renewables policies, which as he has pointed out are counterproductive both as energy and as climate policies.”

Constable made his debut as a member of the GWPForum this week in the Sunday Telegraph’s article “Revealed: the great wind farm tax ‘con’” where he criticised the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) re-examination of public funding for onshore wind as “just spin doctor stuff, it’s playing with words”.

Is This British University Becoming a 'Propaganda Machine' for the Fossil Fuel Industry?

Read time: 2 mins

Concerns over academic integrity have been raised following the appointment of John Constable, a well-known anti-wind farm campaigner, as the head of a new energy institute at the University of Buckingham.

Britain’s leading private university “risks becoming a propaganda machine for the fossil fuel industry” The Independent wrote yesterday, noting that the university has a history of aligning with the interests of dirty energy and climate denial.

The university is known for its ties to Lord Lawson’s climate sceptic charity, the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF). The Foundation’s director, Benny Peiser, occasionally lectures at the university, and it has awarded honorary degrees to both Lawson and Matt Ridley, GWPF academic adviser.
