David Attenborough Calls on Voters in US and Australia to Respond to Climate Science Denial Among Leaders

Veteran broadcaster David Attenborough has expressed his disappointment at the rise of climate science denial in the US and Australia and called on voters to respond.

Referencing the rise of climate science denial in some countries while giving evidence to a committee of MPs in the UK, Attenborough said he was “sorry that there are people in power and internationally, notably the United States, but also in Australia” where “those voices are clearly heard”. He said he hoped the “electorate will actually respond” to public figures that promote climate science denial.

The UK’s principal climate science denial campaign group, the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), has appointed one of its donors, Dr Jerome Booth, as a trustee. 

Booth is chairman of Anglia Ruskin University’s board of governors, and an economist and investor with a focus on emerging markets and international development. He is also currently a visiting professor at Cass Business School in London, having previously worked as a Lecturer in Economics at Oxford University’s Christ Church college and as an executive officer for the former Department of Trade and Industry.

In a fiery exchange at this week’s Prime Minister’s Questions, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey told the government it was “running down the clock on our planet”.

She said “three current cabinet ministers have denied the scientific consensus on climate change” and pointed out that several of those vying to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister have “close links with organisations and individuals promoting climate denial.”

The US leaders of a scandal-hit American student movement are touring the UK this week, following the launch of a British branch of the organisation last month.

Advocating climate science denial, “free markets and limited government”, and with numerous links to the fossil fuel industry and Donald Trump, Turning Point claims to have a presence on more than 1,300 college campuses and high schools, engaging in “over 500,000 face-to-face conversations with college students each semester.”

The scandal-hit group has been plagued by incidents of racism and allegations of illegal campaign spending since its launch, with its “professor watchlist” accused of stymying academic freedom.

The new chairman of the UK’s principal climate science denier campaign group holds investments in a number of fossil fuel companies, including those building controversial oil and gas pipelines in Canada.

Labour peer Lord Bernard Donoughue was handed the reins of the climate science denying Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) after former Chancellor Nigel Lawson stepped down earlier this month.
